Why You Should Not Buy Domains From UK2.NET
Following on from my earlier post, here is an explanation of what happend a couple of weeks ago and why rossbrown.net was unavailable for a few days.
When I first registered this domain back in 2000, I foolishly used UK2.NET as they were the cheapest. I since tried to migrate the domain to a different host, but found UK2 did not respond to my requests. I kind of resigned myself to the fact I would have to host with them for another 12 months, until I could sort out the migration, so I stumped up the £12 or so for another year and thought that was the end of it. Closer to the cut-off date, I received a warning via email that my domain was about to expire, despite me having paid the renewal. This made me wonder whether UK2 had received payment, so I checked by logging in to their site and viewing my details. Sure enough, it was showing PAID, so I made a mental note to keep an eye on things.
On the big day, I found out to my cost that UK2 had cocked up the renewal and my domain had been put on hold by TUCOWS / OpenSRS (the actual registrar - UK2 are just a reseller). Naturally, I tried to contact UK2 to get them to sort it out, but had no success at all in doing so.
I have since found out that the entire UK2 operation consists of nothing more than a few cgi scripts hosted on servers in London Docklands. They offer NO support, you cannot email or telephone them and whenever you try to contact them you always get sent back to their “friendly” help pages and FAQ. Not too clever when you need something fixing, since the information is next to useless. In the end, I did manage to find a mailform on the website, but I am still waiting for a reply. They did used to have support forums, but they were full of people moaning about the terrible service that UK2 provide, so unsurprisingly they were taken down.
In the end, I contacted TUCOWS directly, explaining the situation. They were very helpful and gave me a way out - re-registering the domain with another host would transfer it across and give me another 12 months. The one drawback was the Admin contact email address would need to be changed to my address, since it was showing hostmaster@uk2.net. To do that, I had to fax some photo ID along with a form to TUCOWS, but it was pretty painless. I also contacted TUCOWS’ compliance people, complaining that UK2 were not giving me adequate service.
In the end, my domain was transferred to a new host and I have another 12 months left to run. I am also completely free of UK2 (I transferred my other domain away from them too, neverhappy.com) and I will never use them again. They don’t deserve the business.

To contact uk2.net
The office admin tel no is 0207 9870517 (they don’t advertise this so please spread it far and wide. If they change it let me know and I’ll find out the new one)
Fax: 0207 987 0424
Their managing director is Eric Anderson - I’m sure he would be delighted to hear from you all. BTW, they don’t answer the phone “UK2.net, can I help they just pick it up and say “hello so don’t be put off. Ask for Paul in technical support. Be specific, apparently there are 3 Pauls on staff:-))

The 020 7987 0517 number seems to have been abandoned. I just rang it for as long as the phone would ring, but no-one answered. Anyone got Eric’s home number?
Yes, I’ve been trying to move a domain away from uk2, on behalf of a client. UK2’s business ethics leave a lot to be desired
They really have no right to “kidnap” domains the way they do. I want to make a complaint to the UK Trading Standards people. This would carry more weight if a group of people all griped together. Howzaboutit folks?

I’ll complain if you like, but they no longer host any of my domains

Like you, I too have been trying to move my domain registration from UK2 and have been reading your experiences. In your web link to TUCOWS, are they the same company as DomainDirect.com? With thanks.

Hi Stephen
Yes that link is a bit strange, I’m not sure why it links to domaindirect.com? It should probably be http://helpcenter.tucows.com/
It sounds like you first need to get the Admin contact details changed from UK2.net to yourself - go to http://resellers.tucows.com/adminchange/adminforms/adminchange_cno.htm and fax the completed form and some photo ID to them. Once your admin details have been updated, you can easily get the domain transferred to another host.
I also wrote to Tucows compliance dept, telling them of the complete lack of response from UK2 and they were very helpful. If you are also having grief, you may want to write to them as well.

I’m currently looking into moving my companies domains and webhosting from UK2.net and have got to say i am not shocked at the responses on this thread and the slating these people get from results on a uk2.net google search! Man these guys suck!!
Can you verify the fee for releasing domains? Is it £19 per domain.

Hi John
There should not be a fee for releasing the domain. I paid for 2 years of domain hosting with another firm (ICDSoft, who also host my websites) and once the domain was transferred, I had 2 years to run. You will lose money on however long you have left to run with UK2, but hopefully it shouldn’t be much. Incidentally, I was told transferring to another host could be problematic if the domain had only just been bought/renewed.
UK2 don’t seem to acknowledge that your domain has moved, I was still receiving reminders near my domain’s UK2 expiry date.
Don’t forget to make sure you are listed as the WHOIS Admin contact before you attempt to make the transfer away from UK2.net, otherwise you WILL have problems!

UK2 are really dodgy and they make many a questionable claim on their rather odd looking website.
Someone is making a lot of money out of very little work!

Well… i wish i had found all of your comments before i registered with uk2!! i too am having problems with them. i am in cyprus and cant even call there technical department, there billing department is very east to get through too but funnily seem incapable of anything!! i have so far had 3 months of free e-commerce packages with UK2 because they will not debit my account.. one plus anyway. but now they have closed it all and are taking forever to sort a problem i have out to do with my e-commerce package!!. they even replied that it wasnt a problem for Technical!!! i didnt realise billing was meant to sort out my webdiversion addresses etc… so i told them so.. if someone has another number i can call UK2 on that would be great as the one above does not work anymore.. im dying to give paul in technical a piece of my mind… well i have started looking elsewhere for another e-commerce package…. idiots that they seem to be… if anyone wants my support to complain about them let me know.

Believe it little has changed - don’t be fooled by the rebrand. UK2 won’t release my domain even though numerous request have been made and the process followed in full. Any up to date info on how to force my domains away from this ‘organization’ would be much appreciated!

It is really very difficult trying to get domains away from UK2.net. Even if you find the “hidden” form on their website to do it, and go through all the weird convoluted loops of faxing, confirming, etc then they change the admin contact on the domain, send you the passcode, which is all well and good BUT THEN they KEEP IT LOCKED i.e. status is left clientTransferProhibited so you then can not complete your transfer! Then, they scrub the data from the nameservers so your domain reverts to the Uk2 holding page, THEN they ignore all support tickets, they do not take calls except on 50p per minute lines, they ignore faxes, and generally it will take a lot of stress, maybe 4-8 hours out of your life, just to move one domain away from them. They are a horrible organisation to deal with. Avoid at all costs - I recommend staying as far away from UK2.net as possible. My experiences have been absolutely dreadful - each and every time, it is the same.

I’ve dealt with several domain registrars & hosting companies over the years (in both a work and personal capacity) and I have to say that whilst there are other organisations out there who leave a lot to be desired, none even starts to come close to UK2 in terms of incompetence, apathy and poor service. Moving my domain from them definitely left a lasting impression of the company and I don’t miss an opportunity to slag them off to anyone who will listen.
If all you want is to register a cheap domain then fine, they’ll probably do. But if you ever want to do anything more with your domain or *heaven forbid* move to another registrar then you should definitely explore all the other options first. And I mean all of them.
Oh and I’m having trouble migrating a domain away from safenames.net at the moment, so there may be a post on them soon too
